Artist Residency

An artist residency situated in the heart of Banglatown, Detroit centered on a small urban garden in a densly populated neighborhood. The residency program’s primary aim is to aid in the production of ambient, atmospheric and healing music. We belive that the world is more peaceful when there is contemplative music reaching the population, so we share resources to make that vision a reality.

Aquarian Sound is situated in a house with the studio being on the first floor and an upstairs apartment designed for artist accomidation. There is one full size bed, kitchenette, bathroom, stereo and writing desk.

In Detroit, Aquarian Sound was built from the belief that music holds an essential place in modern society. In a world shaped by constant noise, speed, and digital overload, music can create space for reflection, healing, focus, and genuine human connection. It reminds us to slow down and listen — not only to sound, but to ourselves, to one another, and to the environments we inhabit.

Aquarian Sound exists to support artists working within that philosophy by providing a dedicated space for creation, experimentation, and rest. Through our recording studio and artist residency, we aim to give producers, composers, and songwriters the time and atmosphere needed to make meaningful work.

John Hanson is a Detroit-based producer, filmmaker, educator, and community builder whose work centers on the belief that art can strengthen human connection and promote well-being. 

As the founder of Aquarian Sound, he creates ambient, neoclassical, and experimental music while supporting artists through recording, collaboration, and creative mentorship. Alongside his artistic practice, Hanson teaches digital marketing and creative media, helping students develop practical skills while encouraging authentic expression and thoughtful storytelling.

Rooted in Detroit's vibrant Banglatown neighborhood, Hanson lives and works alongside his family, drawing daily inspiration from the area's rich multicultural character and strong sense of community.

His home studio is situated on an urban farm where seasonal growing, local food, and outdoor gathering are woven into everyday life. He is also the creator of Ambient Night, a long-running community music series dedicated to healing, reflection, and bringing people together through immersive sound. Through Aquarian Sound and its artist residency, Hanson seeks to offer visiting artists a place to slow down, connect with their surroundings, and create meaningful work within a uniquely Detroit environment.
